The VERA

The VERA (Vestal Review Award), an annual tradition at the magazine, was discontinued in 2020. It honored the best flash fiction of 500 words or fewer published in print or online between January 1 and December 31, nominated by the magazine editors of the original publications. The award had no submission fees but allowed only one nomination per magazine, either a print or online publication.

The winner received a prize of $250, second place $100, and third place $50. The stories by all three authors were republished on the VR website, along with a link or mention to the place where they were originally published. The award also featured an interview with the first-prize winner.
